From Whisky Magazine Tasting Notes: "Nose: Sweet, delicate but intense. Touch of hyacinth. Caramelised apples, pine nuts. Chestnut purée. Coffee beans. A varnish hint. Becomes creamier and fudgier as it gets aerated. Palate: Very smooth and round. Oily. Fudgy. Oak and spices slightly overtake the fruitiness. Finish: Long. Drying on nutty notes. Black pepper. Comment: A pleasant balance between oaky and creamy notes. The finish is surprisingly long for the alcoholic strength. The mid palate is a bit watery."
In 1996, the Heaven Hill Distillery burned to the ground in a spectacular fire, and production space was made available by the Early Times distillery in nearby Shively, Kentucky, where most J.T.S Brown was made for some time.
J.T.S. Brown is best known as the whiskey preferred by fictional pool hustler "Fast Eddie" Felson in the 1959 Walter Tevis book The Hustler and its 1986 sequel, The Color of Money, and in the movies by the same titles.
J.T.S. Brown was the name of a very popular improv troupe at I.O. Chicago, featuring performers that have gone on to great success - including Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live), T.J. Jagodowski (T.J. & Dave), Peter Grosz (The Colbert Report), Ike Barinholtz (MADtv), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), and John Lutz (television writer) (30 Rock). Their signature performance format is now part of the I.O. curriculum.
The troupe had a sold out reunion performance at the 2008 Chicago Improv Festival.
